I make gardens for people who want to enjoy being in them, improving vistas and sight lines and creating views seen from windows. I like to design and plant borders which bear close inspection, giving seasonal interest and fragrance as well as providing texture and movement discernable from afar. I aim to plant for at least three seasons of perennial plants, with shrubs to give year round interest.
Having been invited to visit a site, I talk to clients about their wishes and advise how I can help. Budgets vary enormously. Making, planting and improving borders and landscapes is my speciality. I work closely with Thomas Edgar of Fantastic Gardens, and with Nicholsons Nurseries. They build borders, lay terraces, roll out lawns and do all the back-breaking work required. I am happy to work with clients’ landscapers too.
I draw rough sketches, peg and mark out proposed borders etc., modifying along the way. If a great deal of change is needed often a survey is required. Should a client want a formal design drawn, I contract this out. Once the hard landscaping agreed and on the way to completion, I create plant mood boards, using photographs and references to books, confirming plant lists, sourcing and planting. I like to make sure that all plants are of good quality and planted in the best possible conditions, and aim to do a great deal myself and supervise other assistants.
